This is especially for Jennifer and Michele!

(I'd like to encourage my other friends to try the xange site I have printed below!)

If you grew up in Lancaster Co., PA.

you ate and most likely learned to make Shoo-Fly Pie

    if your Mother enjoyed baking!

Jennifer....it is a Pennsylvania Dutch specialty. Before I was married I worked at a farmer's market for my aunt and uncle; the tourists were very interested in tasting Shoo-Fly pie!

Michele....I'm happy to share my recipe with you. I'll place it at the end of this entry.

I want to encourage both of you to go to this xanga address I have below. I do not know Kay, personally, but I have REALLY enjoyed trying her recipes!

FOR HER SHOO-FLY PIE recipe, follow this:

www.kitchenscrapbook.com  Once you are there, scroll almost to the bottom of that first page  and you will come to her Shoo-Fly Pie recipe. I really wanted to bring you here as I think you will enjoy seeing her step-by-step process.

I hope you will enjoy looking through her other entries as well!

If you try the pie recipe, leave me know how your family likes it!!

This is my recipe, Michele. It is very similar to Kay's. Her recipe is titled "Wet Bottom Shoo-Fly Pie;" I prefer a more cake-like topping and less "goo!"  (I'm in the minority for that opinion!)

    Crumbs: 1 c. flour     1 Tbsp. butter    2/3 c. brown sugar

Mix with electirc mixer; then reserve 1/2 c. for the top of pie.

Into the remaining crumbs add the following: 1 egg     1 c. molasses    1 c. boiling water  1 tsp. soda

Mix well  and pour into unbaked 9" pie shell. Top with crumbs reserved at the beginning of the recipe.  Bake at 375 degrees for 10 mins - reduce heat to 350 degrees for 30 mins.

Be sure to serve this with vanilla ice cream!!   If you order this pie at a restaurant, they will ask if you want it warmed! It's yummy either way! (If you don't care for molasses, this may not be a favorite! Therefore, I use Kings Table Syrup - that gives a very good mild flavor!)

  • Sounds delicious!  Are you Dutch?  My husband's are both from Holland so I was just wondering!!!

  • Thanks for the comment on my blog.  You pie sounds almost exactly like the recipe I use.  It is a favorite of ours!  Have a blessed day!

  • Thanks for posting the recipe! I am not one to bake for fun usually, but Caiden enjoys it, so we made muffins yesterday. Maybe we will have to give this a try sometime- we will have to get some molasses first.

And Jen, Jenni, or Jennifer are all fine with me. I think most people introduce me as "Jennifer" but I am probably called "Jen" most often.

  • Oh I am so glad you posted your recipe, I meant to ask for it the other day when you mentioned it.  I have never had this type of dessert either and would like to make it.  I am one of those that enjoy's baking and cooking a lot :)

  • Thank you so much for posting your recipe and the link for some others. I'll have to give your recipe a try.

  • Cordy, I just want to meet you and give you a big hug and talk and sip coffee together... you are amazing and i just know you are a woman like I'd hope to be when i'm a grandma.  Your last comment to me was so precious... I so know you feel this pain with me.  But most of all you said two words that I want to put on a stone by Angel Grace's grave site...  our "forever gift".  LOVE that... and it will always be so special to me.  That is truly what she is.  Rachel

  • @singingrachel - I would love to meet you, Rachel! You're on my mind from time to time....just checking in this evening to see how you are doing? (You are still on my daily list to pray as I know healing comes....but sometimes not as quickly as we think it should. I am ever so grateful that our Heavenly Father is patient with us; therefore, I think we need to be patient with ourselves. That wordy sentence is meant to be encouraging!)  :)  Blessings, Cordy

  • @threejoys - Thanks Cordy for thinking of me.  Physically I'm finally feeling almost normal and that took longer then I figured.  Emotionally, it's amazing how that comes and go's for me but I feel "Ok"  with where I'm at.  I have had this longing and prayer for awhile that I could know and understand the heart of God in a bigger way and I have this feeling, (ok,i'm sure he does) that God knows what it will take to get me there and my desire really is to embrace this spiritual exercise in my life and let God "grow" me... bit by bit.  The song,"Put on the Garment of Praise" has become so special to me the last day or two.  No matter the heaviness,   I find praising my Jesus to bring so much healing... and His Word brings tears and comfort as God shows me over and over that HIS heart can be trusted.  Blessings to you friend.... let's hold tight to his hand.
